Zombie Scene (Blocking)

Fresh animation, yes!  I've wanted to do some new bi-pedal animation for an age now, but with dragon work I just hadn't found the time.  I especially want to get a new dialogue shot underway, but as lip sync is probably my weakest skill right now it made more sense to focus on something I'm good at.  So, that's where this new zombie pantomime shot comes from.  I came up with the idea over the weekend and shot some video reference.  After some quick thumbnails (and constructing the 3D set) I begin blocking out that shot.  I really wanted to push the feel of the zombie, especially his arms, as he walks towards the house, and I think it's coming along nicely.  It needs some more breakdowns in a few spots, but it's not to far from being pushed out of stepped mode - in case you're missing the point, there's a shotgun that comes through the door (eventually through an actual opening in the door and not just through the door itself) giving the zombie second thoughts.

As for the dragon, the animation part of the film is getting close to being finished, believe it or not.  I've seen some of the fully rendered shots and they're gorgeous, plus I've been informed the releases is set for the middle of 2012.  Still a ways to go for your eyes, but it will be here in no time.  Looking to spruce up my demo reel with some dragon and zombie in time for next month's CTN Animation Expo (http://www.ctnanimationexpo.com/) in Burbank.

Epicness

...taken to an epic new level, epically.

The magic baseball throw might be my favorite.

Man's best friend

Still one of my favorite places to visit at Disney's California Adventure: The Animation Academy.  It really makes you appreciate how simple artwork can be by breaking things down into simple circles and arcs (such as this drawing of Pluto I did).  I've never considered myself much of an draftsman, but I always leave the AA with a sense of accomplishment having drawn something that actually resembles one of the Disney characters.

Notes on a reel (and other stuff)

As you can see, an updated version of my demo reel has been added to JasonSvoboda.com. It feels more like a transitional reel, especially with all of the unfinished Tiny Juggernaut work on there, but I needed to submit it for a potential internship program. The TJ stuff is going to look flippin' sweet when it is properly lit, textured and fully rendered - the whole project is just going to take a bit longer than expected. I've already mentioned the week we took off to work on the Fire City project, but we had also been waiting to get a finalized rig for the dragon (which we now have) so we could move forward unhindered. I'll be transferring (or "transfering") animation from the old rig onto the new, which is a bit of a tedious process, but after that we should be making the final turn towards the finish line. Quite a few different avenues things could head down from here, but I'll keep you updated.

Fire City

I found this photo on Fire City's facebook page - why is that so cool?  Because it's a photo of the shot I animated!  All the demons you see flying around the buildings (as well as landing on the left-most building) were my handywork.  They may not be moving in the photo, but damn do they look cool!

95 Percent, give or take

Well, it's not perfect, but at this point I'm ready to move on to other shots.  I've got less than two weeks before a submission deadline, so it's time to say this shot is either good enough or it's not...and I think it's okay.  I'm amazed by some of the downright peculiar things I came across while revising this shot - the graph editor was, quite frankly, in shambles.  But I suppose that's all part of the learning process, of which I was in the middle of when this shot first came to pass.  I think the lip sync needs the most work, but it's also the thing that will take the most time to correct.  So, rather than spend more time here I'm moving on to a brand new shot.  I'm not sure if I'll have time to complete it, as I mentioned May 13 is the deadline for an internship I'm applying for, but I'll see what I can do.

All that, and there's still dragon work to be done.  And work at Disneyland.

99.5 degrees on the thermometer when I walked the dog today and no chance to get to the ocean.  Booooo!!

You can compare and contrast the previous version of the shot with this video:
