Week 11 - 48 Percent (Polishing)

Here we are, the end of another term at Animation Mentor.  Nothing left but the home stretch; two more terms and then graduation.  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Just kidding Wink

I'm pretty pleased with where this piece is at, and knowing that facial animation is yet to come I feel that it will be a sweet shot when it's all said and done.  Some new tweaks this week, as well as a full render, so I hope you enjoy!

More animation:

And here is Gene's polished shot, which is a bit of a contrast after my rather subtle acting piece.  You can find his brilliant video reference in this post.

Up next: Class 5, Advanced Acting

Week 10 - 48 Percent (Refining)

Last week's changes were wholeheartedly approved by Boola, so a large part of this week was technical (read: boring) work within the graph editor.  There are some minor adjustments to the actual animation, as well as a few eye blinks, but for the most part everything moving forward will just be polish.  We won't actually start animating the face/mouth until Class 5, just in case you were wondering when that would begin.

Catch unawares:

This was one of those hand poses that I just kind of played around until it kind of looked right.  You can rack your brain, but you probably won't come up with what this hand looks like (or what it's supposed to look like); survey says: surprised.

Week 8 - 48 Percent (Blocking Plus)

Unfortunately, I found myself with a bit of a short schedule this week as I was going to be out of town for the weekend (early Turkey Day festivities). Although I feel like the animation is progressing, I would have a liked a bit more time to define some of the action better before handing this assignment in. I still have several weeks to get this right where I want it, but for this week I think it came up a bit short.

"It got into my hand, and it went bad..."  Wow, how long has it been since I was handing in individual poses each week?  Quite a while, that's for sure!  Well, the time has come again, only instead of a full body pose, we've moved on to hand only poses.  This week's hand?  Anger.

Next week: Refining (and maybe another hand)

Week 7 - 48 Percent (Blocking)

And the winner is.....clip #2!  It was the overwhelming favorite after last week's video reference and was definitely the clip I was most excited to animate.  I've already found that animating subtle acting is an entirely different beast than animating physical action, but I'm definitely up for the challenge.  As you can see, I didn't do a whole lot with the mouth this week as I was more interested in nailing down the body gestures and the overall feel for the animation.  Also, the mouth isn't exactly the most expressive (remember, this character doesn't have full facial controls), so it will be interesting to see how best to use it in the coming weeks.

Next week: Blocking Plus

Meet Bishop

I'd just like to thank Stewie for all of his hard work - ball balancing, baseball, ACTs - but it's time for a new era, the Bishop era.  As I inch ever closer to a fully functional character, Bishop is one step away (he lacks full facial features).  He does, however, have real eyeballs and a puppet mouth, so things could get exciting!

And yes, he does kind of look like a space alien.

Week 6 - Intro To Dialogue (Video Reference)

So, it's been narrowed down to these three choices from the selection of audio clips below (see "Getting a jump on Week 6"). I know, I know...you might as well just hand me the Oscar right now, my acting is that good! I still haven't decided which of these three I will be animating, but that will all be settled by next week's assignment.

Be sure to check out my buddy, Gene - also a fine actor - who apparently has a better handle on how to act "womanly" (something Crystal feels I am severly lacking):
