Week 11 - AM: The End Of An Era

I have to admit, I feel kind of weird.  No more lectures.  No more assignments.  No more Animation Mentor.  It's certainly a great feeling of accomplishment knowing I completed the program, and in the course of just 18 months have become a pretty decent animator...but it's going to be weird not having class anymore.  The new adventure awaits, however, and I'm excited for everything that will entail - there's plenty more to follow, so stay tuned!

Next week: To infinity and beyond!

Week 10 - Demo Reel (First Pass)

Well, here we are, the first look at what recruiters will see when they decide whether I'm hirable or not.  Kind of scary, huh?  Next week is actually the last week to hand in assignment's at AM, so I'll make some changes in accordance with Sean's notes and then render all the scenes so they're more appealing to the eye.  After that, I'll keep refining - and hopefully adding - to the reel until I get a job...and then beyond that.  Your demo reel is never really finished, as you need to keep it up to date even when you're gainfully employed - you never know when you'll want to make that jump to Pixar :)

This is just a first pass at what my DVD inserts will look like, but I already have plans to change it up a bit, add a little bit more spice (that's right, Jack, spice!).

Next week: updates to my reel and the end of the AM trail

Week 9 - The Catch (Revision1)

This was always one of my favorites - especially the ending - and I think it's looking better than ever.  It will probably require some additional tweaks, but it's almost there.

Next week we start the piecing together of our actual demo reel, so you'll start to see all the shots together as I continue to work on them, as well as adding some music and title cards.

Week 8 - The Pitch (Revision2)

All of these revisions are starting to get boring, what I really want is something new to work on.  Unfortunately, I might not get that chance before school ends, as it appears the class might start shifting towards the actual creation of a demo reel (as in burning DVDs and creating labels) and resume, meaning the days of revisions might be at an end.  Still, we'll do at least one more week of it, so expect to see The Catch revised for next week.

Week 7 - The Hit (Revision2)

Featuring the newly completed ending...which has already been chastised by Sean because he preferred then ending where Stewie looks off into the distance (in the wrong direction) at the end.  Yeah, yeah, so he's probably right and I'll be changing it back, but none the less, he did love the new swing, so that's good.  I probably won't hand this one in again, but I'll make the suggested changes and you can see the finished product when I complete my full demo reel.

Next week: I think it's back to The Pitch, but we'll see

Weeks 5 & 6 - The Hit / The Pitch (Revisions + Ref)

Week 5:

Week 6:

Here's a double dose of assignments, as I was gone on vacation this past week.  As you can see I've dipped back into the baseball shots, all of which I think will look really great on my reel (when properly polished).  I'll be reworking the ending for The Hit, so you'll see some old video reference as well as the new key poses blocked out.

Next week: I'll probably do some more revisions on The Hit, as well as finishing off the new ending

Week 4 - End Of The Trail, Shot 2 (Revision3)

Time to put this one away for a while.  It isn't close to being finished, but I'm starting to develop a strong dislike for it.  I spent a lot of time this week just working on shot 2, which is why I only uploaded shot 2 (I didn't even touch the other three shots), and it still looks like crap.  Okay, maybe not crap, but I'm to the point where I only see the bad things about the shot and not the good, and that's why it's going on the shelf.  Hopefully I'll have time later in the class to come back to it, if not I'll just finish working on it on my own time.

Next week: Revisions for a different shot

Week 3 - End Of The Trail (Revision2)

Not a lot to say this week, more revisions, but nothing ground breaking.  The thing with most of these revisions will be that they'll be mechanical fixes and not stuff that is very eye-catching (especially to the non-animator).  Hopefully, this shot will just kind of start looking better and better, but you won't exactly be able to put a finger on why.j

Next wee: Same shot, more revisions

Week 2 - End Of The Trail (Revision1)

Let the revisions begin!  This will be the first of multiple revisions for my End Of The Trail shot, with additional shots to follow.  The main difference about this shot is the new camera angle/move.  Sean suggested the camera move at fram 135, which I like, but I decided to try out the camera movement (where it zooms in for the final close up).  Unfortunately, Sean's not a huge fan of the camera move, saying it feels a bit too CG.  One thing that was preached to him by the great Steven Spielberg is that just because we can move the camera anywhere and any way we want in the CG world, doesn't mean that we should.  He suggest switching back to a cut, so that's probably what you'll see next week.

Class 6, Week 1 - AM Portfolio

This isn't anything new, pretty much just a rehashing of my AM demo reel, but the assignment for this first week was to upload all of our previous work so our mentor could help us decide which shots could be used on a professional demo reel (and what shots should just be dismissed).  As I've already received my critique (Sean is a bit of an unorthodox mentor), I can tell you the list of shots that will be making the cut:

End Of The Trail, Stewie Takes A Test, All three baseball shots, and Ballie's double bounce walk.  As it turns out, Sean is a huge Defending Your Life fan, so he was really thrilled that I had chosen a audio clip from that film, he just wasn't as thrilled with the animtion (and I tend to agree with him).  There's still a chance that that shot will make the cut, but it will need a lot of work, so I'll be inclined to leave it until the other shots have been solidified.  I might also put together an entirely new shot durning this class as well, but we'll see how everything else goes first.

Next week: picking my first shot to polish and getting to work on it
